COMMEMORATING 75 YEARS OF THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS: REFLECTING ON THE HUMAN RIGHTS JOURNEY IN TANZANIA, PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE.

The Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC), in collaboration with the University of Dar es Salaam, School of Law (UDSoL), celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The two-day event took place from November 23rd to 24th, 2023, at the University of Dar es Salaam Library Auditorium.

The commemoration was attended by various guests and stakeholders in human rights, including the European Union Ambassador to Tanzania, the French Embassy, the United Nations, international organizations such as Protection International Africa, the Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRAGG), over 400 human rights organizations, and over 100 student human rights defenders. The guest of honor at the event was Honorable Joseph Butiku, Chairman of the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation.

The main theme of the commemoration was to reflect deeply on the entire journey of human rights in Tanzania; to contemplate where we have come from, where we are now, and where we are heading as a nation regarding human rights issues. Stakeholders engaged in comprehensive discussions on the state of human rights. Alongside the commemoration, there were exhibitions showcasing various works by stakeholders and human rights defenders in Tanzania.
