VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITY: ASSOCIATE PROTECTION OFFICER- ONE (1) POSITION ( A WOMAN)

The Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) is a non-governmental, non-partisan human rights organization registered under the Non-Governmental Organizations Act of 2002 in Mainland and as society under the Societies Act of 1995 (Act No. 6) on part of Zanzibar. THRDC is a Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) umbrella organization with a total of 292 member organizations from both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. Its membership and representation in terms of operations and thematic is spread through 11 designated zonal coordinating units and 14 members thematic areas all over the United Republic of Tanzania respectively. The long-term goal of the Coalition is to see a free and secured environment for human rights defenders in Tanzania, and to ensure HRDs in Tanzania carries out their essential work free from harm and repression, in accordance with the UN Declaration on Human rights defenders of 1998. The ultimate result of all these, as this coalition visualizes, is a contribution to the creation of safer working environment for the HRDs. HRDs are organizations or individual who work to protect and promote other rights including Journalists, Lawyers, Human Rights Institutions etc. The Coalition’s Protection Department works to ensure HRDs are accorded with necessary supports including legal support, HRDs are empowered on various matters pertaining their operations and engage at various levels and capacities at national, regional and internationalplatforms to ensure HRDs roles and rights are recognized and protected. The realization of the departmental mandates and roles enough resources including human resources need to be in place. Therefore, THRDC is looking for the knowledgeable, energetic, self-motivated and proactive Tanzanians protection volunteer to serve under the protection department. The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Head of Protection Programs (HPP).

Key Roles
The incumbent will assist the Head of Protection Programs on:
i. Monitoring all human rights defenders at risk requests, asses the risks they face and recommend actions to be taken.
ii. Receiving all complaints concerning human rights defenders.
iii.Ensuring the development of file management system of human rights defenders who are at risk, and record maintenance.
iv. Ensuring the HRDs in need are accorded with the emergency supports such as reallocation and evacuation.
v. Organizing and facilitating HRDs empowerment programs.
vi. Developing protection program budget requirements.
vii. Resource allocation for the assistance of HRDs as well as providing administrative and
legal support to HRDs under the protection program
viii. Representing HRDs before the Court
ix. Organizing programmatic interventions under the desk and participate in coordinating the same.
x. Developing departmental reports in accordance with the required standards
xi. Any other duties assigned from time to time by the supervisor

Qualifications
i. Bachelor’s degree in law
ii. Minimum one (1) year experience in human rights projects
iii. Strong problem-solving abilities; excellent communication skills (English and Swahili) and the ability to collaborate effectively with the teams.
iv. Registered and practicing Advocate with active certificatev. Knowledge in the field of human rights defenders’ security management.
vi. Knowledge and experience in the application of the laws and international instruments.
vii. Have a wide knowledge in the field of human rights and human rights defenders
viii. Work under pressure; meet timelines with good quality deliverables
